While I enjoy when the narrator breaks the fourth wall in a book - that's not what is happening here.
The main voice, an author who is writing her first original work has conversations with her characters, but they are aware that they are characters in a book. It kind of gives me Westword vibes, where there are a few AI who are aware they are part of a story.
I do like the concept, but I do not enjoy reading it. For once, I feel this would be better as a movie. I can imagine everyone freezing while the characters talk to their author, and I can see the image zooming in and out of the book as the tale is told or as the author's own voice and life are the main view shift.
