Review
While this is not the first book in the overall universe this duet has enough background to, mostly, stand on its own.
Within the first book we are brought deep into the world of the Italian mafia in New York, into the lives of the future leaders of each of the different crime families. We meet Donata, a university student with a questionable past love interest, and the object of her obsession, Luca. We watch as the truth of her past comes out, and how she deals with its impact on her current & future relationships. While dealing with her troubles around her she also works with her friends to solve the murder of an innocent woman, and the truth behind those actions.
The novella in between the duet shows us important prequel information that would have contained a major spoiler if we had read it chronological order and helps us to understand some of the motivations of the characters in Book 1.
Book two of the duet picks up right where book one left off, a few years into the future and with Donata, now a doctor, kidnapped and whisked off to unknown places. She must face additional truths thrust upon her and figure out how to save the love of her life from himself.
The only lacking part of this duet is that there seems to be a storyline that I'm missing that was happening either concurrently to this story, or after book 1 and before book 2. I plan on reading more from this universe to see if I can uncover the missing pieces.
