Mates and fates mates are a common trope among fantasy writing; however, multiple partners who are fated is not as common. Extend that to add a modern, scientific spin, being able to determine mates through a blood test, and you have the makings of a brand-new spin on the 'good ole fated mates' trope. Adding in the dynamic of mates being common to find (called bonds or bonded), and you get a whole new dynamic of bonded parental groups where a magical child can have more than two parents, often having 3+ at a time.
Within "Broken Bonds" we are introduced to a young "gifted" someone with magic, who has been captured while on the run. Right away we understand that she has powers, but what they are and why they are hidden is not readily known. Throughout the story we get to know, her bonds, and the turmoil within her life and the community as a whole.
Fans of the series "Motherland: Fort Salem" will especially find ties within this series.
