Review
I love Alexandra Vasti’s writing, and Ne’er Duke Well is no exception. Even though this is book one in the Belvoir’s Library trilogy, I actually read book three first—so getting to see beloved characters step onto the page here for the first time felt like watching the prequel of a favorite show. The crossover moments from Vasti’s other books, especially The Halifax Hellions, had me delighted because they added that “I recognize that!” spark without ever distracting from the story. If you’ve read her other work, those little references feel like finding Easter eggs; if not, the book still stands perfectly well on its own. Above all the playful connections, the emotional core of this story is pure family devotion—Peter’s motivation to secure custody of his siblings is the kind of guiding force I always fall for.
And then there’s the delicious slow realization that everyone except the characters knows they’re meant for each other. Peter Kent is seeking a socially acceptable wife to help him win the courts’ favor, and Selina—who’s the one arranging all these matchmaking outings—quietly believes she could never be that person because of her own secret. I adored how obvious their chemistry is to the world around them while they muddle through denial, fear, yearning, and miscommunication. Watching Peter unknowingly woo Selina while she stubbornly convinces herself she isn’t “right” for him is equal parts heartbreaking and hilarious. Their journey isn’t just about romance—it’s also about Selina recognizing her own worth, Peter winning over society and his heart’s true match, and both of them realizing that together they can face anything. It’s steamy, emotional, and so much fun. I still need to read book two, but knowing where everyone ends up in book three has me thrilled to complete the set. Whether you start with Belvoir’s Library or The Halifax Hellions, the interconnected standalones are an absolute joy—read them in any order and prepare to fall in love.
