Review
Tress of the Emerald Sea" by Brandon Sanderson is a fantastical coming of age adventure where a young woman, Tress, makes the difficult choice to leave the only home she's ever known to find a friend who has been taken captive by a Sorceress. Set in the Cosmeres universe this tale allows the narrator to break the fourth wall and speak directly to the reader. The narrator weaves both adventure and whimsy into the tale he unfolds on the pages of the novel and pulls the reader into the story almost as if they are a participant, instead of an observer. The world created is familiar enough to be relatable but alien enough to be clearly a different planet. There's plenty of hidden foreshadowing of what will unfold, but it's cleverly woven into the tale that you may miss it until the connection are mage on the page.
Great for science fiction and fantasy readers alike, fans of "The Princess Pride", in particular, will find the tale to their liking.
