Lately, I’ve been on a kick with books where the main character is an author, and every single one just reinforces how much I adore this microtrope. In this story, we follow an up-and-coming author who’s published her first book and is desperately trying to write her second—while battling some serious imposter syndrome. Her family doesn’t see writing as a “real” career and keeps pushing her to return to her old field, and things only get messier when a small miscommunication sparks online backlash. Suddenly, the internet is convinced she’s secretly dating—or trying to date—a beloved male celebrity, and the scrutiny quickly becomes overwhelming.
Between the imposter syndrome and the relentless online noise, she decides to escape on a writer’s retreat to another country in hopes of reconnecting with her creativity. What follows is a journey that’s equal parts self-discovery and frustration, because finding her spark again is anything but easy. Just when it feels like she might leave without rediscovering her voice, fate steps in—because of course the charming actor she’s been unintentionally linked to happens to be from the same small town she’s visiting. This is very much a romance with a guaranteed happily ever after, so no spoilers there. While it’s not officially marketed as a holiday romance, a large portion takes place during the holiday season, and I will forever consider it one. Cozy, heartfelt, and incredibly fun, this one hit all the right notes for me.
